Finally have time to startup the DXF-4. What are the preliminary steps to watch for and what are the initial settings for the water injection ? How do we determine that the right amount of water is being injected?
Helpful, Thank you. Also, can you add more fuel on the fly while it's running, like I can with the chip gasifier?..Of course with caution when opening the hopper lid ? Good things to know before running it. I also imagine that you don't want to run it out of fuel as it will damage the hearth.
You can if you are careful and very fast. This was why we went to a crossdraft system. But like any downdraft you can not leave the lid open for very long as the added air will change the energy density of the gas.
Just one of the benefits of using a gasifier to charge a battery bank... You can shut down to refuel while drawing power from the batteries. The firewood season is starting very early this year, wish I had time to play with the DXF-4 . So looking forward to intergrating it into our system.
You do not need very much water. Only one drip per second for most small engines in the 400 to 500cc displacement range.
Other than that the opperation is identical to the machine you have built. You have an ignition port, intake air port, your blower system and engine hose system.
All you have to do is put charcoal in the machine to the lid and fire it up. Once you have a flare you are ready to engine run.
Close off the flare tube valve and also close the mixer valve. (assuming you have ran all gasoline out) Crank the engine over to prime the gas to the engine. Typically the engine will try to fire as there is generally some oxygen mixed from pre start up. Once primed then open the valve in 1/8 turn increments until your generator fires.
Other than that there really is nothing more to it. Once a week pull the grate out a few inches and poke out the pack into the ash bin and clean it out. The Fusion you should never need to mess with unless you let the unit sit for any length of time. It then needs thoroghly washed or it will clog. Simply remove the service cover and with the exhaust port open spray it out with a hose.
Ammo box clean out as needed. The better you screen your fuel the lest dust and there for cleaner filters.
However if there is ever tar present in any filter it must be cleaned out imediatly. Tar will destroy the ammo box and it will eventually reform to gas and make it in the engine.
Thanks for the info. Is the gas cooled enough after it passes through the ammo box so as not to damage the engine carburetor, or should it be passed through a radiator of sorts? Still thinking old school chip gasifier.
Yeah charcoal is a bit different as the process is exothermic. The Fusion is also the cooler and the gas exhaust hose should not ever got to hot and cant hold your hand on it. If it is excesivly hot then there could be a few things going on. One is simply the hopper is too low on fuel. The other is the application is too large and is over driving the unit. But there are other things can cause this too wet fuel is another one and other times its simply bad fuel.
